Predavanja Ad Koningsa
« on: 21 September, 2012, 19:22:27 »

"I would like to explain why we have sometimes almost identical looking cichlids on either side of e.g. Lake Tanganyika but not north or south along the shore of the lake. Case in point: Tropheus annectens. This species was around 140,000 years ago in the central basin (paleo lake) of Lake Tanganyika when water level was about 600 meters below the current level. With the rising of the lake level T. annectens stayed in its preferred habitat (shallow rocky habitat) but moved slowly vertical and horizontally with the rising water along a rocky ridge which soon became completely immersed in the rising lake. Here is some text that I have recently written about it:

From molecular genetic analyses we know that T. annectens split from the Tropheus ancestor about 1-1.4 million years ago (Koblmüller et al. 2010) and from lake bottom core analyses we know that lake levels have dropped dramatically on several occasions in the last 140,000 years. Burnett at al. (2011) found that 94,000 years ago Lake Tanganyika was at least 393 meters below current level while Stone et al. (2011) found that Lake Malawi was approximately 600 meters below current level 140,000-70,000 years ago. At the very low lake stand about 100,000 years ago T. annectens was present and restricted to the central basin of the lake. During that low stand the northern lake basin was separated from the central basin by a rocky ridge that extended from Luagala Point in Tanzania to the Kavala Islands in the Congo, and which is therefore referred to as the Kavala Island Ridge. It needs little imagination to assume that with the rising lake level, T. annectens moved up along the rocky ridge all the while remaining in the upper 10 meters of the rocky habitat. At present the Kavala Island Ridge is underwater and the only habitat left suitable to T. annectens is at either end of the ridge, i.e. Kavala Islands and Luagala Point.

Fantasticno odradjeni filmovi.

Ih bre Neso bas me dizes u nebesa, hvala. :)
